These exceptional prints of James are bespoke and printed to order by Metro Imaging in Central London. Their master printers produce the finest quality traditional prints originating from Steel’s photographic negatives and transparencies. Each exclusive print of James will be personally overseen by Patrick Steel.
UNIQUE
Patrick’s unrivalled, irreplaceable portraits of James have been unveiled for the very first time on 24th October 2021, celebrating both the 30th Anniversary of the photo shoot and the 45th Anniversary of James’ 1976 World Championship win. They are thought to be the only collection of fine art works in existence that were captured of James off track. And have remained unrevealed for the past thirty years.
THE PRINTS
Black and white:
The B&W portraits of James are printed on Harman Galerie Fibre-based Digital paper which is a real Baryta/Fibre based silver gelatin photographic paper based upon traditional black and white silver halide technology. It has panchromatic sensitivity optimised for tricolour laser enlargers such as Durst Lambda. Galerie Fibre-based Digital has excellent D-Max (deepest black’s), sharpness and surface finish that will give superb continuous tone on black and white images.
Colour:
Colour prints of ‘Golden Boy’ are printed on Fuji’s Crystal Archive C-Type paper. The paper uses optimised Silver Halide Crystals for laser exposure. Producing excellent prints from laser printers, offering vivid colour reproduction.
Resolution:
Images illustrated on this website are all low resolution files for web use. The photographic prints will be produced in high resolution ensuring exceptional detail.
Watermarks:
Watermarks will not be present on the original prints.

Cropped images allow James’ face to be printed to a larger scale than those on the ‘full-frame’ prints – for maximum impact.
The Triptych is only available in three print editions / sizes:

The triptych consists of three (full-frame) images side-by-side, printed on one continuous sheet of bromide paper.
LIMITED EDITIONS
Prints will be produced in limited editions of 25 (plus 2 artist proofs) under the supervision of Patrick Steel. The number of prints produced is strictly limited to the number in the edition. No further prints will be produced.
AUTHENTICITY
Prints are signed and numbered by Patrick Steel on verso and are accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

PRESENTATION – ALUMINIUM DIBOND MOUNTING
Standard 20 x 17 inch prints are carefully enfolded in acid free tissue paper and supplied flat in an acid free 4mm 3-ply box (ideal for gift wrapping). Alternatively and at no extra cost, the print(s) can be mounted onto a rigid substrate of archival Aluminium ready for framing. Each print, whether loose or mounted will be numbered and authentically signed by Patrick on verso and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
The larger 40 x 34, 56 x 48 and 72 x 48 inch prints (plus the triptych) are all supplied pre-mounted onto rigid sheets of archival Aluminium. This not only ensures that the print lays perfectly flat but the thin sheets of aluminium protect the print from the ingress of moisture. Once framed, works are then numbered and authentically signed by Patrick on verso. Both the edition number and Patrick’s signature can be viewed on the reverse side of the frame.
